my memory blog!

In class I brought in my mothers old work badge. It has been sitting in my jewelry box forever. Every once in a while I come across it, and it brings back so many different memory's. I lost my mother to cancer when I was ten years old. It shook my world. I had a wonderful mother who always put my brothers and my needs first. She was my whole world. Needless to say my life was very different after she pasted away.

However, I have so many wonderful memory's of her. I remember when she would come home from work and I would sit on her lap. She would tell me how much she missed me when she was gone. She always had a way of making me feel like I was her favorite. She always would bring us treats that where left over from the NCO club. My family would sit around and try all the different deserts she brought home. We sit around and would talk about what was going in our lives.

She had a way about her that everyone liked. My mother was a woman that people loved to talk too as well, you could meet her for the first time and tell her everything. I know if she was still living I would be a different version of myself. My father tells me that I am a lot like her. I do wish that I was able to know her as an adult. I have so many more thoughts that I could write about her.

Even though I didn't have my mother with me for long. I carry her memory with me always! She made such a huge impact on my life in the short time that we shared together. I know that she is with me always and that brings me peace.

EDRG 3321 LITEREATURE FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Hello, Mrs. Pickett
#3

Here is my blog on chapter three. Thank you so much for printing up the power point for me. It was very helpful.

Reading is a fundamental part of the learning process. Children need to comprehend what there reading in order to become better learners. Teachers play a very important role in the process of students learning how to read. A teacher should always have reading material that the children can relate too. Children will love learning how to read if they feel that they have something in common with the story.

The best way too learn how to read in my opinion is aesthetic reading(reading for fun). You should read something that you want to learn about or just read something that gives you enjoyment. Allowing children to do this will set the stage for efferent reading later (reading to gain important knowledge).

When someone can make since of what they are reading they are more likely to be a life time reader. My son loved for me to read Christmas storeys to him during the holidays. I would pick books that had family's in the story who shared some of the same tradition's that we did. I know that he loved the pictures but he could also relate to the story. He understood what the character in the book was experiencing.

I think as teacher its important to have books in the classroom that each student can relate too.
Children should also be exposed to story's that they are not that familiar with as well. The amazing thing about story's, is that a teacher can take her students around the world and never step foot out of the classroom!

Hello, Mrs. Pickett

Here is my blog on chapter two. I really enjoyed this discussion in class. It was very insightful!

When I become a teacher I know I will encounter different cultures all the time. It is my job to be aware of the different types of people that I will be coming in to contact with on the daily bases. I will never try to make someone feel as they do not belong or they don't fit in.
I have experienced surface culture before. I remember when my husband and I went to a family Reunion for his side of the family. I was the only African American person there. Well, really I was the only person of "color" there. I remember there was this elderly lady who came up to me and asked me if I was from Africa. I said no and she just kind of stood there looking at me. She just assumed since I was black that I was from Africa. This was a perfect display of judging someone on their surface culture. She took one look at me and due to my physical features made the assumption that I was not from around there.
However, I know that there are other cultures that are not so easily to detect. For example deep culture, I use to work at a day-care and the cook was from Pakistan her out look on religion and faith was different from my own. I use to love talking to her and learning different things from here country and she felt the same way about my culture.
I have learned so much in my own life that I believe it will defiantly come in handy in my career life. I believe that teachers should always take into account how there students feel about different events that are taking places. This is important because just because the student may look like they are part of a certain culture, that does not mean that they are!
It is very easy for anyone to feel like they do not belong even more so for children. When I become a teacher I will incorporate story's from other cultures in my classroom activities and also activities that include different cultures.
All children should have a fighting chance to become the best version of themselves as possible. The only way that this can be achieved is by allowing children to feel like they too are apart of something bigger than themselves, and to never ever feel left out. After all aren't we all different from from each other.

Hello, Classmates

Here are three more books that I found in my sons room. I did go on line and research these authors as well. I remember reading my child theses books when he was very small. THE WRITING PROCESS

Hello, Classmates

Writing is defiantly a PROCESS! There are many different aspects to writing and a great writer will go through every process (sometimes more than once). Here is what we went over in class as a group.
The 5 steps in the writing process as is follows...

1.) Pre-writing:

Are there other researchers out there thinking like me?

What topics are related to my topic of interest?

What about the topic can I make into a thesis?

Where is there an arguable side of this topic?

Can I see and argue both sides?

What other topics interest me?

Is there anything in the media that I can make into a paper?

How might this affect my daily life?

What kind of examples can illustrate my point?

Is this a fresh/creative topic? Has it become too common?

2.)Drafting:

make a rough draft/out line of your paper

3.) Revising:

add to your story

delete un-wanted information

fix the sentence structure

Here are some other questions you can ask yourself when revising your paper...

Are you saying what you mean to say?

Will your audience understand it?

Will it accomplish the purpose?

4.) Editing:

word changes

minor sentence rearrangement

added transitions

changes for clarity

minor deletions

5.) Publishing:

Making the final hard copy of your paper

TURN BACK THE CLOCK

Trapped between the "Baby Boomers" and "Generation x" is a special generation... a generation we call "Children of the Eighties." It was the time of the real Rubiks cubes, and you were a "wanna be" Madonna, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, or Cyndi Lauper. Many people expressed themselves through Fashion and Music. After all, M.T.V first made its appearance in the 1980's. However, there where many important world changing events that also took place in the eighty's. Whether you were born in this time period or not, this era has had some impact on your life. Lets turn back the clock to the best moments of our timeline, the 1980's!

A new fashion phase was taking place. Girls and young women where wearing Jelly bracelets & shoes! This was a time when people thought Jordache jeans with a flat-handle comb in the back pocket was cool! Even hair defied gravity. Movies and music videos made a huge impact on what clothing people bought as well. When Modonna made her first appearance on MTV wearing her pearl necklaces and lace gloves with the fingers cut off, every high school girl across the nation was wearing them the next day. However, girls weren't the only ones effected by the new fashions. Michael Jackson made wearing red leather jackets cool and sweat bands and "jerry curls" were sexy.

Some of the best movies and t.v. shows ever made were a product of the 1980's! The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, and E.T. were big hits. TV shows
, like Knight Rider, Miami Vice, and Dallas proved to be a good past time in the evenings. Lets not forget the iconic TV show, The Simpsons, made their first debut as well. The 1980's was also a great time for technology too. Atari and Commador 64 were the ultimate gaming systems to own. Kids also went out and bought their first boom boxes and Walkman tape players. In the late Eighty's music Cd's first came out, and that was truly amazing since up until then, we had cassette tapes. With all of this wonderful stuff that was taking place in pop culture, there was a whole world of events that was also taking place.

The 1982 Chicago Tylenol murders occurred when seven people died after taking pain-relief
capsules that had been poisoned. Many families through away their medicines, not just Tylenol, in fear that they had an infected bottle. However, when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded, people were in true disbelief. It was broadcast on every news station and a sadness swept a across our nation. The 1980's wasn't all bad though. The decade brought good memories along with it too. The discovery of the Titanic was made and the Berlin wall came down in Germany! People celebrated around the world. There were many major events that shook us up and brought us down.

No doubt about it, the Eighty's was an awesome time and if you asked anyone who grew up in this era, they too would agree. They say history repeats itself, so lets hope it does (minus the big hair/jerry curls!)

BLOG #2

I found that when a teacher can incorporate other activities with a book, the children will be even more intrigued with the story. When I become a teacher I will use the technique of pre/dur/post strategies. This may help children who might have a hard time with reading comprehension.
pre ideas:
Show the class the book you'll be reading
Ask them what they might think the book is about
Tell them what the book is about
Show some of the pictures
Make a book box
Ask questions that are similar to what the character might be going threw in the story.
Dur ideas:
Show pictures
Ask questions
Pass items around that have something to do with the story.
Make eye contact with students, make sure they are understanding the story
Post ideas:
Act the story out
Ask questions
Do in class activities
If the story had food in it, bring some for the children! (exp. Green Eggs and Ham)
Give test
Write a journal

A good teacher will make reading a blast for the children. By practicing these strategies students will be even more excited about the next story reading! These strategies help students by keeping them interested in the story and introducing them to new cultures.
